The Dunsmuir Neighbourhood Association, the epitome of proactive community engagement in Mission, BC, is the driving force behind the DUC Garden initiative. Established as a response to local developmental challenges, the association has consistently advocated for the preservation of the area's natural beauty and the well-being of its residents. The DUC Garden project emerged from this rich history of community activism, fueled by a desire to utilize local land for food production and communal benefit.
DUC Garden represents a farming movement – an embodiment of community spirit and a step towards a future where food security and sustainability are within everyone's reach. Our goal for year one is not only to establish a thriving urban garden but to sow the seeds of a larger transformation in how communities engage with agriculture and work together to address hunger.
DUC Garden is committed to transforming the way our community connects with food. Our mission is to unite Mission, BC, residents in cultivating healthy, nutritious crops, empowering them with essential skills, knowledge, and experience to achieve food independence. We believe in sharing the fruits of our collective labour with those who contribute to the garden's success, extending support to local organizations, and nourishing our broader community.
Location:
The chosen site for DUC Garden is a unique 9000 square foot City of Mission owned lot, nestled between 33525 and 33543 9th Avenue in Mission. This unconstructed road dedication, though without a formal address, presents an opportunity for the community to shape an unused space into a vibrant agricultural hub. The city's support, demonstrated through a nominal lease agreement, signifies a commitment to community-driven initiatives and a recognition of the transformative potential of urban agriculture.

RE: 7816 Dunsmuir Street
In February 2022, Mayor Paul Horn, via email, introduced the owner of 7816 Dunsmuir Street (Mission Dunsmuir Ventures Ltd) and their project manager from OTG Development Ltd to the Dunsmuir Neighbourhood Association Executives. The goal was to facilitate communication between the developer and the area residents towards building cooperation between the two parties. Since then the Association's President and Vice-President met with the developer and project manager half a dozen times.
The developer listened to the Association's concerns about the proposed development plan and created a second option based on the conversation. Developer followed the Neighbourhood Engagement Policy. Project of 29 townhouses was approved at a Dec 2023 Public Hearing. The Association is happy with the outcome.
